What is the best cost effective cat repellent and are there any homemade remedies that really work?

Check out and email Chetco the best answerer on the Pets section. She recently posted something that is a water sprinkler that is motion detected and comes on when the animals reaches your property. It sends out squirts of water to scare them off. I did some research on it for skunks and I am getting some. This is what it is called. The Scarecrow Water Sprinkler by Aquascape. you can get it from Target and a few other stores.

1. Pepper can be harmful to animals and children!

2. Ammonia does the exact opposite to what your applying, ammonia actually has a very similar smell to cat urine therefore it tends to attract cats to spray in that area rather than repell them!!!

Try some of these popular home-made dog and cat deterrents:

Pepper: You can make a simple animal repellent with black pepper and chilli pepper. It鈥檚 best to grind your own because the smell will be much stronger. Spread the powder on annuals and perennials to keep pets away.

Mothballs: These contain naphthalene which will repel animals. They can be used as a barrier around flowerbeds, but take care with children about.

Citrus: Cats don鈥檛 like citrus smells. Scatter some orange or lemon peels to create no-go zones. Citronella oil is considered to be a good cat repellent but generally it does not appear to have an effect on dogs.

Ammonia: Dogs and cats absolutely detest the smell of ammonia. Buy some cloudy ammonia and dilute with 10 parts water. Spray around the garden and yard but always do a small test before applying to plants.
Red pepper works well. Many people say citrus peelings ( my cats love them.. so dont know) So do Scarecrow motion sensors

I use this one.. homemade. It works and I used it because my stupid neighbor was shooting any cat that entered his yard.

1tbsp Tabasco or other hot sauce

1/2 cup non detergent soap powder ( or 1 tbsp Dragon/Science commercial Sticker..at the garden store)

1 gallon water..

mix well and put in a sprayer to cover leaves and grass at the yard edges.
One thing that may work, there is a plant called ';Pissoff';. I'm unsure of it's botanical name but I know dogs hate it. I'm not sure about it's effect with cats though, it's possibly worth a try though.
