What has been your most efective natural Mosquito repellent when abroad ?

I live in Turkey (from Scotland) and every year the mosquitoes eat me alive. I am very allergic to there bites and swell up around the spot.

Do you know of any natural repellents as I have tried a few, like lemon or garlic, and they don't work.

Many thanks in advance. I'm itching , just thinking about them !!!What has been your most efective natural Mosquito repellent when abroad ?
Hi there,

I'm Scottish too and probably like you, have white skin with a tinge of blue that attracts killer mozzies!

3 weeks ago we went to Goa in India and I was recommended a product called 'Buzz Off' which I bought in

Superdrug for 拢4.99.

It worked a treat and I didn't get nibbled once.

Bit of advice though - always keep balcony doors and windows locked tight at night and no matter how tempting it is, never leave them open.

Have a great time and enjoy some sizzling kebabs! What has been your most efective natural Mosquito repellent when abroad ?
Cheers Pal!

wierdly i let everyone else put on the repellants and they are the one's that get eaten.

when i do get bitten, i always try to have an antihistamine cream to hand. Cannot recomment this enough, a bite bigger than a matchbox will disappear in 10 minutes!
Lavender is good.
plastic bubble

Holland %26amp; Barrett may have something natural for you.

if they are in the place you are living buy one of them insect lights, they are very good.
Did you go there to escape the midges.?
skin so soft by avon or green rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle with water stops heat and sweat.
Citronella oil, either in incense sticks/coils, candles or in an oil burner, is really good for keeping them away. There are also a couple of brands of insect repellent that contain citronella to apply to yourself - Moziguard used to be just citronella, but now I think you have to buy the one called Moziguard Natural if you want to stay away from chemical pesticides. I've heard that eating marmite keeps them away - but I've never tried that coz it's disgusting! Apparently it's the B-vitamins in marmite that they don't like, so maybe you could take B6/B12 supplements instead? Good luck keeping the wee b+++ards off you.... Hx
Citronella is the best - sprays for clothing %26amp; candles for room or out door use will keep the blighters at bay. The most effective way to avoid being bitten is to wear protective clothing (even just a cotton shirt %26amp; long trousers will be good), use insect repellents (citronella, geranium essential oil, lavender essential oil) and sleep under a mosquito net.
Yeast, yeast, yeast!! Do you like marmite? Start eating it! This really works, and as you're male you shouldn't have any problems with it (women don't want too much yeast in their bodies).
Catnip oil....it's active ingredient is nepetalactone.

You'll have to search for it, but it works.

I have found that an ammonia based mozzie pen gives instant relief after the event.... Also cures hangovers when sniffed....

Just a thought, but we feed our cat zinc tablets to repel fleas...seems to work too.
Can't go wrong with cintronella oil
when we went on holiday we were told to drink tonic water so i mixed it up with loads of things cordial and also gin it did work but i guess everyone is different hope it helps
I would try to double up on couple of these suggestion that you have gotten every time your are outside.

I would rub on Skin so Soft by Avon

Take the B6/b12 vitamins

and I have also heard that you can rub your clothes and exposed skin with dryer sheets and that will repel the mosquitoes. And, dawn dish soap on the bite after you have them reduces the itching a great deal.
In South East Asia, they burn coils of an incense type substance. It seems to work.
I am told that eating Marmite each morning works, but i have not tried it yet
an anorak
every year before i leave Scotland to Spain i take antihistamines for a fortnight before i go, and it works. Someone living in Greece told me your own urine helps although i haven't tried it yet.
Garlic oil capsules, but not the odourless ones. The garlic odour will be on your skin, but not enough for Humans to smell you. The Mosquitos will not come near you. I took them on my 2 tours in Australia in the hot season. It worked and I never got bitten ones and I usually get eaten alive!

Good luck!
It's probably not convenient, but what about a net?

Where are you staying? Is it possible to close windows before dusk and are there insect screens?
I am just like you it happens to me everytime i am on holiday and i also go puffy and end up on antibiotics...The best thing to do is not to use any repellents, i found the last time i never used them i didnt get bitten..

Hope you have a nice holiday!
